A challenging course but also a fair one, Tain offers a supremely picturesque setting with the sea on one side and mountains on the other. It has a relatively sheltered location and as a result it’s playable throughout the year. A pleasing mix of both links and heathland styles, it was originally designed by Old Tom Morris, although it has been adapted and improved on occasion since.
There are plenty of stand-out holes waiting to test you here, and the second is one of the finest. A par-four that isn’t overly long – just 351 yards from the yellow tees – it requires total concentration and unwavering accuracy. Dense rough down the left is to be avoided, and the undulating fairway can carry your ball in a number of different directions. There’s a burn that will come into play for the long hitter, and, just when you think everything is safe, a couple of deep bunkers strategically placed around the green.
Tain is an excellent option to include in an itinerary, in part because it’s within easy reach of several other superb courses, including Royal Dornoch, Brora and Fortrose & Rosemarkie. This region is rich in golfing heritage, and that’s why it appeals to so many visitors from around the world, all of them keen to experience golf in the way it was always meant to be played.
