Located on a thin strip of land on the Chanonry Peninsula on the Black Isle and not far from Inverness, Fortrose & Rosemarkie is one of the world’s oldest golf clubs. The course represents a pleasingly varied set of challenges, with greens both large and small, and fairways both wide and narrow. The current layout owes much to the input of the legendary designer James Braid.
On just about every hole, you’ll see dramatic views of the Moray Firth, and although it’s a relatively short course there are plenty of dangers along the way, including dense gorse, deep bunkers and long grass. It’s worth noting as well that some holes feature somewhat blind approaches, so you’ll need to be thinking strategically throughout the round. Another important factor is the strength of the wind, which can be strong and can change direction in a moment. Even the shortest holes can play considerably longer on a blowy day.
It’s easy to include Fortrose & Rosemarkie on a golf tour’s itinerary, thanks to its location close to other venues such as Nairn and Tain. And as you might expect from a trip to such an iconic part of Scotland, there’s plenty to see and do when you’re not on the courses. Trips to Johnston’s of Elgin’s Cashmere Mill and the historic Aldourie Castle are both well worth experiencing, for example.
